The Orbit Collection

William Waris, Liza Sanborn, Kolby Krishna

The Orbit Collection is a collaborative furniture series designed with two peers, inspired by the flight paths and motion of satellites. The collection explores how rolled metal tubes can express movement and weightlessness through clean geometry and repetition.

Fabrication

Integrated form studies, CAD modeling, and hands-on fabrication to refine the final designs.

Design

Explored how geometry and repetition can visually express movement through structure. Balanced aesthetic lightness with structural strength, emphasizing flow and continuity.

My Inspiration

The inspiration for Orbit comes from the 60s space race and space age ideas.

01

The Precursor

The Astro Table was created by me before the collection, Orbit became the continuation.

02

Initial Sketching

A range of basic designs were drawn up before moving forward.

03

Hololens

The hololens was the backbone for quick testing of size and dimensions.

04

Midreview - the turning point

After a less than ideal midreview the project was brought back to the sketching phase.

05

Finding the right style

After many sketches and CAD models the design for Orbit finally felt right.

06

Metal Bending

Full size templates were used and manual bending of the metal was done.

07

Welding

Each part was carefully welded together

08

Learning through failure

Early testing showed the structure was not strong enough, so I added a back brace to triangulate the design.

09

Painting

After careful grinding and sanding, it was ready for paint.

10

Final Touches

After painting, the cushions, wiring, and tabletop were all screwed on.
